Autumn term 1 is going quickly and half-term is nearly upon us. End of term is Friday 24th October with half-term running 27th-31st October. We return on Monday 3rd November.
All term dates for this year can be found on the notice board in the lobby and on the Playgroup web-site.
Don’t forget you can also join the Playgroup Facebook group where we post ideas for play activities, things to do locally and any important messages about events.
We congratulate Hajar for receiving her Level 2 qualification at the end of the summer term and now she, Francine and Hajar are all working hard on their Level 3 qualifications. Their tutors visit regularly to observe them in the setting. The weekly staffing rota is posted in the lobby and we do our best to ensure that when staff are off for any reason children are well supported by staff known to them, usually their key person’s key base buddy!
Please remember that no drinks are needed in lunch boxes as we provide fresh drinking water. We also request no packets of crisps and only one small sweet treat. We do check lunch boxes and remove items.
We have found children can manage more independently and will often eat more of their lunch if it is provided in smaller pieces.
Some children have very large rolls or sandwiches which can be rather daunting. A general rule is that the bready or carbohydrate content of a meal for a child should be around the size of their fist!
Grapes and other small round fruits, such as cherry tomatoes need to be cut up as they can be a choking hazard.
Please remember Playgroup cannot reheat food
Curriculum this term:
We started the term talking about our holidays and what we did over the summer. The children shared some lovely memories with us and we made some pictures inspired by trips to the park and the seaside. We also recorded some of the children’s memories in scrap books.
We are now reflecting on the season and exploring autumn fruits and leaves, learning about woodland creatures. We take our lead from the children’s interests too so have been enjoying lots of superhero play this term.
Do remember we go out each session, in all weathers. We have lots of boots, coats and hats here for children to use but do remember to dress children ready for messy and outdoor play.
Tempest photography will be visiting Playgroup on Wednesday 26th November to take child portrait photographs. All Playgroup children and local families welcome. There will be no obligation to buy but any packs of photographs bought will earn some commission for the Playgroup
Playgroup is managed by a dedicated Management Committee made up of volunteers. The Chair Person is Ben Haydon, member of the local community who has had two children through Playgroup. Other members of the current Committee are: Caroline, Kay, Beth, Miranda, Adam and Nicola. The Committee needs a couple more parents to join the Committee this year. If you can offer support in this way please get in contact via the email address or speak to Catherine.

This year’s annual fireworks are being held at South Oxford Adventure Playground and are a joint venture between Playgroup and SOAP: raising money for both groups. This is an important fundraiser for both groups and more helpers are needed for it to run smoothly. If you can help run a stall or steward on the night please talk to Kay (Ted’s mother) or Catherine as soon as possible. The fireworks are to be held on Wednesday 5 November early evening. See posters for details.
Yellow Moon Gift Catalogue
The Yellow Moon catalogue is a fundraising magazine for groups and charities. It has a range of craft materials and toys and is a useful source of party bag goodies or stocking fillers! When making an order use the special code on the front of the Catalogue and Playgroup will get a small commission. Playgroup usually makes around £20.00 a year in commission but the more you buy the more we make!! Copies in the cubbies and in the parent room: give a copy to your friends too…
Playgroup now has a great new outside shelter for bikes and buggies. This will help us keep the lobby clean and free from obstructions. There is a padlock bar in the shelter so that buggies and bikes can be secured if necessary. We see it is already being well used. Many thanks to Benjamin Wardburgh for making the grant application to Oxfordshire County Council and to the Parks Department for the great job they made installing it for us.
Playgroup was inspected by Ofsted on Tuesday 7th October 2014. We are delighted to announce that Ofsted has rated Playgroup Outstanding. A copy of the report will be circulated after half-term and will be available on the Ofsted website soon. We are planning to have a Playgroup party in November to celebrate. Thank you to all the parents, volunteers and staff who have supported Playgroup over the years and developed provision from Playgroup’s beginnings way back in 1969.
